The addition of pelvic physical therapists to our gender confirmation team has been a real game changer for some of our patients. We work with Amy M. who comes to most of our clinics and routinely sees our post-op vaginoplasty patients as well as alternative private practice Pelvic PT’s that we refer patients to.
What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?
These are physical therapists who have special qualifications and certifications and really just specialize in the pelvic floor. As you know, your new vagina, like any vagina, is made to travel through the vaginal hiatus which is basically a channel that goes through your pelvic floor. The pelvic floor is essentially a sheet of muscle, and the better control you have over it the better you will be able to use and enjoy your new vagina. The therapists bring a lot of expertise in areas such as incontinence, sexual function, and they are experts in dilation, which of course is so important for the vaginoplasty patients. If this is something you believe might be beneficial to you, you may be interested to know that we are putting together a list of experienced therapists on our website. These therapists are culturally competent, and know how to help out our transgender women with whatever problems they may be experiencing.
